Black ice causes several accidents across Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) — Freezing rain made driving treacherous on Chicago area roadways early Friday morning.

Numerous accidents were reported as drivers lost control over patches of ice. Some area expressways were closed while crews worked to clear accidents and salt the pavement. The entire stretch of the Indiana toll road has been shut down in both directions because of ice.

The icy conditions caused a 10-car pileup on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 43rd. There were no serious injuries in the pileup.

Many drivers on the Eisenhower Expressway were caught off guard by the black ice on the roadway that was created when the freezing rain moved into the Chicago area. There were several spinouts and rollover accidents.

Motorists say the road conditions were unpredictable
